Once upon a time in a place unknown lived a very talented painter named Hugo. He was known for his beautiful paintings and it was his only livelihood. He lived in a cottage with his dear mother who was weak because of her prolonged illness. Hugo had a best friend named Fred and he was a talented dancer. While Hugo would be busy doing his paintings, Fred would entertain the crowd with his beautiful dance and money earned was distributed among themselves to sort out their financial crisis. They both were quite happy in their lives when one day King George announced, "I am looking out for a boy who is suitable enough to become my daughter's fiancé'. I am least bothered whether he belongs to a rich family or poor, I just want him to be an excellent dancer. I will be throwing a big party tomorrow at my palace and I wish that the future king of our kingdom would be present too!"
"I want to attend the party" Hugo said excitedly to Fred when they were having their dinner,"you very well know that I love Princess Tina a lot."
"I think you should give it a try then" Fred said, patting Hugo on his back.
"But how? Only an excellent dancer can win Tina's heart!" Hugo exclaimed with disgrace.
Fred bit his lip and got engrossed in his own thoughts. Meanwhile Hugo fed his mother and then an idea struck him.
"Fred! I got an excellent idea!"
Fred did not pay attention to him and Hugo smacked on his head.
"Ouch! What's wrong with you?" Fred snapped.
"Just come out of your dream world and listen to me! I have got a brilliant idea! What if you attend the party tomorrow and pretend as if its me?"
"Rubbish."
"Wear a mask so that no one can recognize you and when told to introduce yourself, just tell that my name is Hugo."
Fred thought for a moment and said,"But that's cheating."
"Oh come on! Can't you do this much for your best friend?"
With exaggerated pleadings and requests, Fred finally agreed to attend the party as Hugo.
When asked by the king, he danced gracefully in the party and became the centre of attraction. He was mysterious in the eyes of others' because of his black mask and as planned, he told that his name was Hugo.
Fred had to attend many functions organized by the king and slowly he found himself falling in love with the princess. Princess Tina admired him too and she was very desperate to see his face.
"I don't care if you are not good looking" she said him in one of the parties," I just know that you have got a wonderful heart."
Fred used to feel very guilty and he felt like telling Tina the entire truth but for his friend's sake, he hid his feelings reluctantly.
The wedding day finally arrived and Hugo himself attended it, wearing the same black mask. When the rings were finally to be exchanged, Hugo removed his black mask and surprised the audience. Princess Tina was very happy as her love finally showed his true identity. Before he could exchange the ring with Tina, King George interrupted suddenly,"I want Hugo to do his last performance."
Everyone was shocked and Tina whispered in her father's ear, "Please father. Today is my wedding! Is this the perfect time for all this?"
"Of course my dear daughter. A last performance. For Hugo!" The audience cheered and Hugo got very scared. He looked at Fred who was trying to avoid him. He looked at Tina and then at King George. He looked towards the audience who was eager to see his dance. He had no choice but to give up.
"I cannot dance" he said loudly with his head bent low, "because all this time, my friend was dancing for me." There was a dead silence and Hugo continued, "I am a painter and not a dancer. I love Princess Tina and in order to impress her, I told my friend Fred to dance for me and to win her heart. I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I am very sorry." Hugo wept hysterically and fell on his knees. King George kept his hand on Hugo's shoulder and said, "Get up my child." Hugo got up but could not meet eyes with the king.
The king then said, "I have heard a lot about you Hugo. You are very famous and talented and hence I know who you are. On the very first day I realized that something was wrong when your friend Fred introduced himself as Hugo. I have not seen you, is confidence my child. But I have not even heard about you is over-confidence. I agree that you love my daughter. But if you really want to achieve what you desire, then you should learn to choose the right path. Short-cut can bring you happiness for sometime but not for entire life time. And if you want to win someone's heart, then first be honest with yourself because honesty is very important in any relationship."
Hugo apologized to the king and called Fred to join them. He took Fred's hand and kept it on Tina's.
"You two deserve to be together." He looked at the king and the king smiled.
Fred and Tina got married and they lived happily ever after.....
